SpaceNews has highlighted Earth-i Ltd plans to launch a satellite late in 2017 to capture high-resolution video imagery in colour and pave the way for a constellation of similar spacecraft.

Earth-i sells images and services from Airbus subsidiary Surrey Satellite Technologies Ltd.’s DMC3 constellation, as a master distributor for primary customer Twenty First Century Aerospace Technology. The constellation captures Earth imagery with a resolution of less than one meter. When SSTL launched the three-satellite DMC3 constellation, it also launched Carbonite-1, the first prototype for a new constellation.

SSTL has nearly completed construction of a second prototype called EiX2 for Earth-i’s new constellation. SSTL and Earth-i plan to launch EiX2 in the fourth quarter of 2017. Blain declined to comment on the launch vehicle that will send the EiX2 satellite into orbit.

“Because we are getting full color, full motion video from space for the first time, there is a reasonable amount of work to do to understand how to optimize the use of that video and the transfer of data either through some preprocessing on the spacecraft or more heavily on the ground,” Blain told SpaceNews at the 2017 GEOINT Symposium.
